Instructing Claude Code to Code by Voice via Grok Bot

The author had Grok Bot send keystrokes to a Claude Code session running in tmux, so they could give coding instructions by voice and watch the process on screen.

How it works

  1. Grok Bot can run Claude Code in headless mode, but the author wanted to see what was happening inside the session.
  2. So, they ran Claude Code inside tmux (a tool for splitting terminal windows), and had Grok Bot send keystrokes to that session using tmux commands. Grok Bot also reads Claude Code's output.
  3. When the author gave instructions by voice, they could watch Claude Code's reasoning process on screen, and Grok Bot would briefly summarize the results by voice.

Results

The author said it felt like having a technical lead sitting next to them. They did not specify what tasks were completed.

Notes

Specific tmux commands or configuration files were not disclosed.

Example prompt · Grok Bot

Set up so that when I give voice instructions, an AI assistant relays the tasks to a coding agent inside a terminal, and I can watch the process on screen.

Input: repository to work on [path], coding agent to use [e.g., Claude Code], terminal session name [name], summary length for voice feedback [e.g., three sentences]. First, check if tmux and the coding agent are installed on my computer, and whether the AI assistant has permission to execute terminal commands on this computer. If not, just tell me what permissions need to be granted.

Setup steps: 1) Start the coding agent in a tmux session with the specified name. 2) When I speak instructions, the assistant sends them as keystrokes to that session. 3) The assistant reads the session output and gives me a brief voice summary of the progress. 4) If the coding agent asks for confirmation on actions like deleting files, force pushing, deploying, or installing packages, the assistant should not approve automatically but ask me first. 5) When I say stop, send the interrupt key.

Deliverables: session start command, method for relaying instructions and reading output, approval rules, example voice summary. First, test by creating a file in an empty test repository, and check if the on-screen output matches the voice summary.
