Creating a Tool to Edit and Share Formula Documents via Link

The author created a tool using Claude Code that displays pasted LaTeX as a document and allows the same content to be reopened via a link.

How it works

  1. Simon Willison requested that LaTeX be rendered from the URL fragment (after #), and that an editor be shown if there is no content.
  2. They requested a method to compress long formulas for sharing via link, and to allow switching between editing and result views. They also requested the ability to load from a URL or GitHub Gist.
  3. There is a record in the commit of discussions and code reviewing the risks of executing external documents and considering how to display them in a separated view.

Results

A LaTeX tool with formula input, preview, and shareable links was released.

Notes

The author confirmed the creation request and the public code. Compatibility and security for all LaTeX commands were not separately verified.

Goal: Create a tool to edit and share formula documents via link.

Input/Environment: [LaTeX example to display], [supported browsers], [available rendering library], [working folder].

Reference original: https://github.com/simonw/tools/commit/955cd795140f2a706e7b47bcdea8d4d8e5a32218

With reference to the public LaTeX tool, create a webpage that allows switching between an editor and result view. Read the original content from the URL fragment and allow sharing of long content by compressing it. If the address is empty, open the editor, and for URL or Gist input, show a failure state if loading fails. Review the display area and data handling to ensure external input does not execute scripts with page permissions. Provide an explanation of the executable file and supported scope.

Do not speculate about account connection methods or outcomes not present in the original; first, provide the necessary setup and execution steps. Start from a working copy to preserve existing materials, and indicate if any items are inaccessible.

Verification: Compare a single-line formula, a long document, Korean text, an invalid formula, and a compressed share link with the original. Indicate unsupported commands and browsers not actually tested.

Along with the result, organize the input used, execution records, and confirmed results. Clearly distinguish between completed work and parts that failed or have not yet been executed.
