Creating a Music Video Using Only Code with Song File and Lyrics

The author reports that two Claude sessions took on the roles of director and producer, creating a 4K music video drawn entirely with code, without using any image generation tools.

How it works

  1. The author set only one condition: all scenes must be drawn with browser code, and no image/video generators or stock footage may be used. Claude made all other decisions.
  2. The Claude app session acted as director, splitting the song by instrument, timing the drums and lyrics, and writing a design document. On the PC, Claude Code created a renderer and drew 16,074 frames in 4K using WebGL shaders.
  3. After the first render, the author assigned Gemini to provide critical feedback. The director session compared the feedback to the actual frames and only fixed issues that matched. This process was repeated five times.

Results

A 4K video was completed. The author reports that the full render took about 11 hours on a GTX 1080, so for the final stages, only changed scenes were previewed in 720p, and the full 4K render was done once at the end.

Notes

Claude did not include lyric subtitles due to copyright concerns, but instead provided a method using a PowerShell script. The rights to the song belong to the original creator, and the author reports that they do not intend to monetize it.

Example prompt · Claude Code

Create a music video using a song file and lyrics for which you have rights, drawing all scenes with code.

Input: Song file [mp3 path], lyrics [text], desired mood [e.g., dreamy abstraction], resolution and frame count [e.g., 4K 30fps], your graphics card [model]. First, confirm with me that you have the rights to use this song in a video, and do not begin work until you have received confirmation.

Divide the process into director and producer roles. The director analyzes the song, creates a table of beats, drums, and lyric line timings, and writes a scene design document. The producer creates a browser-based shader renderer, draws frames according to the design, and saves them as files. Do not use image/video generation tools or stock footage. At each milestone, the director reviews frame captures and writes down any revisions.

If the full render takes a long time, preview only changed scenes at lower resolution, and do the final high-resolution render only once at the end. If you receive external feedback, compare each point to the actual frames, reflect only those that are accurate, and record the rationale.

Deliverables: completed video, beat/scene table, design document, revision log. First, create only a 30-second segment at low resolution to check if the music and scene transitions match, then expand to the full video.
