Building an MCP Server to Help Search and Apply for Job Postings

After his wife was laid off, he built a job-hunting MCP server using Claude Code. It lets you search job postings, tailor your resume, and submit applications all in one place.

How it works

  1. He combined features usually found in web apps into the MCP server. It includes job database search, resume matching, tailored resumes, and daily new job alerts.
  2. Claude Code split the handover documentation into 12 pull requests and wrote Postgres integration tests and OAuth 2.1 login.
  3. For employer site applications, only postings approved by the user are submitted.

Results

After launch, he reported 450 users and 75 daily active users. For every 100 paid subscribers using automatic applications, there were 83 interviews, according to his notes.

Notes

This is a post by the founder introducing his own service. The user and interview numbers have not been independently verified.

Example prompt · Claude Code

Create a tool that helps with everything from searching job postings to preparing applications.

Input: My resume [file], desired job type/location/work format [criteria], job services to connect [services]. First, check which search, document, application, and authentication features are officially provided by each service. Clearly indicate any features that are not provided.

Organize search, job detail view, tailored resume editing, pre-submission review, and approved application as independent functions, and connect them via the MCP server so Claude can call each one. Define the input and output format for each function to ensure they behave the same as their web counterparts.

Link job requirements to actual experience, but do not invent experience you do not have. Allow users to download and review the modified resume, and before submitting, show the company, job, and submission documents again. Hand off any steps that require login or additional answers to a human.

Deliverables: Server code, connection guide, and function-specific tests. Test for no search results, expired authentication, document generation failure, approval cancellation, and duplicate applications, and only proceed with actual applications after final confirmation.
