Display Coding Agent Status with Keyboard Lights

Help the author use the Caps Lock indicator light or keyboard backlight to show the status of a coding agent.

How it works

  1. Install capslkagent. On macOS, use brew; on other operating systems, download and install the binary.
  2. After installation, run the command 'capslkagent install-hooks --agent all' to connect to all supported agents on this computer.
  3. Restart the agents. Now, when an agent is working, the light turns on; when waiting for user approval, it blinks; when idle, it stays off.
  4. On macOS laptops, use the '--backlight' option to display status using the keyboard backlight.
  5. You can also manually control the light with commands like 'capslkagent on', 'blink', or 'off'.

Results

The author reports that when the coding agent is working, the Caps Lock light or keyboard backlight automatically turns on or blinks, making it easy to check the agent's status without looking at the screen.

Notes

Supported agents are Claude Code, Codex, pi, omp, Amp, and opencode. The tool automatically adjusts for each agent's configuration file or plugin location. On macOS and Windows, the Caps Lock light is linked to actual uppercase input, so typing may result in capital letters while the light is on. The original source did not directly verify whether the light changes or if it works properly for each agent.

Example prompt · Claude Code

Install and connect capslkagent so you can check the coding AI's work status using keyboard lights.

Input: Operating system [OS·version], keyboard [built-in/external], AI to use [tool], desired indicator type [Caps Lock/backlight]. First, check the current supported environments and installation methods at https://github.com/jagenaujagenau/capslkagent.

Install using a supported method, then add status connection only to the AI I specify. Preserve existing settings and record changed files and recovery methods. If Codex hook trust or other user confirmation is needed, provide guidance.

Test that the light turns on during work, blinks while waiting for approval or response, and stays off when idle. On macOS and Windows, check if the Caps Lock indicator affects uppercase input in your environment, and compare the backlight method on supported Mac laptops.

Deliverables: Installation and connection details, indicator method, test results, and removal instructions. Test not only manual on/off, but also actual AI work start, approval wait, and end, and confirm that keyboard status returns to normal after disconnecting.
