An agent that finds and cleans up unnecessary Windows AppData files

The author located large hidden folders and asked Codex to check which temporary files could be deleted, freeing more than 10 GB.

How it works

  1. The author used a tool such as FolderSize to reveal hidden folders and first locate large folders under User/AppData.
  2. They gave suspicious folder paths to Codex or Work and asked it to identify temporary files that could be removed without causing problems.
  3. They also checked test-build folders created while developing apps with tools such as Tauri.

Results

The author reported deleting over 10 GB of junk that cleanup tools such as BleachBit had missed.

Notes

The author warned against following the process without understanding the AppData structure, and recommended first configuring a hook to block commands that could delete the entire system.

Example prompt · Codex

Find unnecessary files on my Windows laptop that cleanup tools miss, and identify only the ones that are safe to remove.

Inputs: folder to inspect [e.g., C:\Users\YourName\AppData\Local], target space to free [GB], and programs that must not be touched [list]. First check whether safeguards prevent deletion commands from going outside the specified folder. If not, explain how to set them up first.

Process: 1) Show a table of subfolder sizes, largest first. 2) For each large folder, identify the owning program and whether it contains cache, temporary files, old installers, or test builds. 3) Separate items into safe to remove, removable only after closing the program, and must not be removed. 4) Move only the items I select to the Recycle Bin; do not delete permanently. 5) Record the moved items and the increase in free space.

Deliverables: a table of folder sizes and reasons for each decision, the list of items actually moved, and restoration instructions. Test only one folder first and verify that its related program opens normally before expanding. Leave uncertain folders untouched and listed in the table.
