An agent that builds 3D models in code and checks dimensions and collisions

The author released SOMA, a CAD app where Claude Code creates 3D models with CadQuery code and measures the results itself.

How it works

  1. Claude Code writes a model in Python CadQuery code, and SOMA rebuilds it on every save and displays it in 3D.
  2. SOMA provides commands that let Claude perform measurements, collision checks, structural analysis, and rendering, then inspect the results.
  3. Users can mark up screenshots of the 3D view to indicate changes. According to the author, every step is recorded so mistakes can be rolled back.

Results

The author said the CNC milling machine in the video contains 118 parts. SOMA itself was also written mostly with Claude Code.

Notes

It is free, GPL-licensed open source and reportedly also works with Codex, OpenCode, and Gemini CLI. Testing has focused on Windows; macOS and Linux have been checked less thoroughly.

Set up a workspace where a coding agent designs a 3D model of [part or device] in code and checks its own results.

Inputs: object [part name and purpose], dimensions and constraints [size, hole positions, materials], manufacturing method [e.g., 3D printing, CNC], and references [hand-drawn sketch photo or an existing STEP file]. First check whether CadQuery and a 3D preview tool can be installed on my computer [operating system], and explain the tradeoffs between using an open tool such as SOMA and assembling a custom setup.

Implementation: 1) Write the model in Python CadQuery code and rebuild the preview whenever it is saved. 2) Make measurements and inter-part collision checks executable through commands, reporting the results after every modification. 3) Put manufacturing-specific rules, such as minimum thickness and tolerances, in a project rules file. 4) Apply change requests marked on screenshots I provide, recording every change so it can be undone. 5) Get my confirmation before exporting or overwriting files.

Deliverables: model code, a STEP file, a table of measurement and collision-check results, and a list of remaining issues. Start with one part, verify that its dimensions meet the requirements, and then expand to an assembly.
