Automation That Checks Steam Wishlist Discounts and Sends Alerts

Every 6 hours, it checks the prices of games on a Steam wishlist and sends a one-time alert through Discord or another channel when a price drops to or below the target.

How it works

  1. The creator often missed Steam wishlist discount emails, so they built an n8n workflow and a Python script that check game prices every 6 hours.
  2. It alerts through Discord, Telegram, Slack, or email only when the price is at or below the target, the discount meets or exceeds the specified rate, or the price is lower than last time, and it sends the same discount only once.
  3. The Python version checks both a public wishlist and the free CheapShark API, and if GOG, Humble, or Fanatical is cheaper, it includes that link as well.

Results

When the creator tested it with the real Steam and CheapShark services, Balatro was 14.99 on Steam and as low as 12.39 elsewhere. Running it again at the same price sent nothing, while the n8n version sent three alerts only on the first run.

Notes

The wishlist must be public, and CheapShark prices are in U.S. dollars and for PC. It uses an unofficial public endpoint, and alerts were tested only with a mock server. The creator operates TaskToAgent.

Example prompt · n8n

Build an n8n automation that alerts me only once when a game on my Steam wishlist falls below a price I set.

Inputs: whether my Steam wishlist is public or a game list [app ID and name], target price for each game [amount], minimum discount rate [percentage], alert destination [one of Discord webhook, Telegram, Slack, or email], and check interval [for example, 6 hours]. First, verify whether the Steam price lookup endpoint returns values in my country's currency and whether an API for comparing prices at other stores is available.

Implementation steps: 1) Run periodically with a schedule trigger. 2) Look up prices for the game list in one batch. 3) Mark a game as an alert candidate if at least one condition is met: at or below the target price, at or above the discount threshold, or lower than the previous check. 4) Deduplicate discounts already sent in a previous run. 5) Include the game name, current price, list price, discount rate, and link in the alert message. If the unofficial endpoint changes and causes an error, send one error message instead of an alert.

Deliverables: an importable workflow file, a list of values to configure, and test records. First, run it twice in succession with two or three games and a test webhook, and confirm that no alert arrives on the second run.
