An Agent That Built an App to Use an Old Scanner on a Mac

To use a 17-year-old Samsung scanner with no driver on a Mac mini M4, the creator had Codex build a dedicated app.

How it works

  1. Even after switching to a Mac, the creator still had to turn on a separate Windows PC because of a 17-year-old Samsung scanner. HP, which took over Samsung’s printer and scanner business, had not released an Apple silicon driver.
  2. VueScan, recommended by ChatGPT, recognized the scanner, but placed a watermark on every page unless the creator bought a $99 lifetime license.
  3. They handed the problem to Codex, which reportedly produced a Mac app with dials for adjusting brightness and contrast.

Results

The creator said an app that used the scanner just as on Windows was completed in under 10 minutes, saving them $99.

Notes

The post does not include the request given to Codex, the app code, or how the scanner was connected. It has not been confirmed whether it works with other scanner models.

Example prompt · Codex

Build a small scanning app that lets me use an old scanner on my Mac even though drivers are no longer released for it.

Inputs: scanner manufacturer and model [for example: Samsung model name], connection method [USB or network], my Mac model and macOS version [version], required features [resolution, color or black-and-white, brightness and contrast adjustment, PDF or image saving]. First, investigate whether macOS recognizes this scanner at the system level and whether an existing public driver or open-source scanning backend can be used. If direct communication with the device is required, explain how it would work.

Implementation steps: 1) Find the device and show its connection status. 2) Perform one preview scan. 3) Adjust resolution, color, brightness, and contrast, then perform the full scan. 4) Save the file to the chosen folder. If system settings must be changed or another driver removed, tell me exactly what will change and get my confirmation before proceeding.

Deliverables: a runnable Mac app, build instructions, and a list of known limitations. First test one low-resolution black-and-white page and confirm that the file saves correctly, then test color and high resolution.
